The Foundation has made many accomplishments over the
last 20 years.
- In 1982, Nancy Brinker established the Susan G. Komen with only a few hundred dollars of her own and a shoebox full of friends' names. Today, the Foundation is an international organization with thousands of volunteers working through its Affiliate network in 48 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Germany and Italy.
- Susan G. Komen is one of the nation's
largest private funding sources for breast health and breast
cancer. Since its inception in 1982 through 2004, the Foundation has
awarded over 1,100 grants totaling more than $180 million for breast
cancer research. In additon to research grants, Komen Affiliates
fund non-duplicative, community-based breast cancer screening, treatment and
education programs (STEP) for the medically underserved. In 2004,
Affiliates awarded more than 1,235 grants totaling more than $41.1 million for
STEP.
- Komen's 1-800 I'M AWAREŽ Breast Care Helpline is staffed with
volunteers whose lives have been personally touched by breast cancer.
Each year, the Helpline handles over 50,000 calls and responds to over
3,500 email messages.
- In October of 1983, eight hundred women attended the first Komen Race for the
CureŽ held in Dallas, Texas. In 2005, the Komen Race for the CureŽ
is the world's largest 5K Series and will be held in over 100 cities,
with more than 1.3 million participants.
- In 1982, corporations were reluctant to support the fight against breast
cancer because it was considered "too negative" and conjured up feelings of
hopelessness. Today, twenty-one major corporations comprise the
Foundation's Million Dollar Council.
